Project content

Based on the review that biogas production is still lagging behind in Europe in relation to the objectives fixed for 2010 and its important role within the European Biomass action plan, this project has contributed to foster the biogas development in seven highly motivated European regions.

The barriers for developing this technology were manifold. Profiting from countries like  Germany and Austria with a rapidly growing market of biogas plants the organised know-how transfer and sharing of experience enabled a rapid uptake in the less developed regions. The mobilisation of positive synergies between the different sectors (local authorities, farmers and food processing industries) and their concrete project implication has increased the implementations of biogas plant projects. The territorial approach facilitating partnerships between the different sectors and the elaboration of a strategy and action plan in each region overcame a part of the obstacles and creating a biogas friendly environment.

The results are in the 7 high motivated regions :

Strategic outreach:

Regional strategy and action plans for the development of biogas production giving medium and long term orientations

Information, awareness raising and training

*        In each region 1 700 major stakeholders from agriculture, municipalities and agro-food industry to be reached, electronic newsletters and brochures informing in total 12 000 decision makers.

*        Organisation of training sessions and information seminars assist and developing the biogas know-how for 300 motivated technicians

*        Operating and updated web pages in country language giving thorough and accessible information to at least 16 000 visitors

*        High replication effect through the organisation of seminars presenting the project results to a larger public at regional and EU level involving at least 250 decision makers from local authorities, agriculture and business sectors.

Investment preparation and know-how transfer

*        Production of computerised opportunity study tool, realisation of 37 studies

*        Efficient technology transfer through matchmaking with experienced partners from GE and AU

*        Identifying 14 sites and preparation of studies for investment triggering at least minimu 7 new biogas installations in the future.
